Education

Latvia’s education system consists of preschool, primary, secondary and higher education. General education lasts 12 years in total, including nine years of compulsory primary education and three years of secondary education. In Latvia, preschool education is compulsory for children aged 5 or 6.

Primary education includes general primary education (grades 1-9) and vocational basic education. Secondary education includes general secondary education, vocational secondary education and vocational training. Higher education includes both academic and vocational study programmes.
