Reason for entry – marriage (family reunification)
What documents are needed to apply for a residence permit if my spouse is a holder of a permanent residence permit or a Latvian citizen or non-citizen?
You need a sponsorship from your spouse if your spouse is a Latvian national, a non-citizen or a holder of a permanent residence permit.
Before submitting the documents, the inviter must confirm sponsorship with the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs.
Documents to be submitted:
- A full copy of your passport (the original must be certified by the foreigner).
- A questionnaire form for residence permit.
- A portrait photo of a person.
- A criminal record certificate issued by the competent authority of the country of nationality or of the country of residence, if the foreigner has resided there for more than 12 months (for a foreigner over 14 years of age).
- A document proving the necessary means of subsistence. The subsistence level is EUR 700 per month. If you have family members travelling with you, the minimum subsistence allowance is EUR 700 per month for an adult and EUR 210 per month for a minor.
- Proof of payment of the state fee.
- Marriage certificate.
If you are accompanied by a minor or dependent child, you must provide all the above documents (except marriage certificate), as well as a document confirming the kinship and a permit to stay in the Republic of Latvia notarised by the other parent or signed in the presence of a government or mission office official.
What documents are needed to apply for a residence permit if my spouse is a holder of a permanent residence permit or a Latvian citizen or non-citizen?
- A questionnaire form for residence permit for third-country nationals.
- A supplementary questionnaire for citizens of the Russian Federation and Belarus (if relevant).
- A copy of a valid travel document (all pages with entries or notations). The conformity of the copy shall be certified by the applicant (correct copy, number of pages, name, date, signature).
- 3×4 cm portrait photograph of the person.
- A criminal record certificate issued by the competent authority in your country of nationality or home country if you have been there for more than 12 months.
- A document proving the necessary means of subsistence for the duration of your stay in the Republic of Latvia (EUR 700 per month, EUR 210 for a minor).
- Proof of kinship.
- Proof of payment of the state fee.
If your spouse has a temporary residence permit, you will need a sponsorship from your spouse’s employer or educational establishment. It will only be possible to obtain a residence permit if the employer or educational establishment agrees to issue a letter of sponsorship or invitation, which is not a mandatory requirement.
