Riga Neighborhoods Through the Lens: Photo Walks for International Students Photowalk No 5. – Zaķusala
The contemporary photography platform ISSP continues its series of photowalks designed specifically for international students studying at universities in Riga. The photowalks are an invitation to explore the city’s diverse neighborhoods in a creative way, discover lesser-known places, meet local people, and connect with fellow participants.
Registration is now open for Photo walk No. 5 – Zaķusala with Mārtiņš Grauds
🗓️ Saturday, September 5, 14:00 – 18:00
📍 Meeting point – Memorial to the Barricades of 1991, ACIS
On this photo walk, we will explore one of Riga’s main islands, Zaķusala, together with photographer and documentary filmmaker Mārtiņš Grauds. Located in the very heart of the city yet surprisingly wild and tranquil, the island is dominated by Riga’s monumental TV tower.
Grauds will share his research into the island’s past and present, as well as his approach to observing and documenting places. During the walk, we will visit the Memorial to the Barricades of 1991 and a hidden Riga Wake spot, before setting off on an exploratory hike across the island to discover its hidden beaches and stunning views of Riga’s Old Town.
After an afternoon of photography, conversations, and attentive observation, participants will have the opportunity to share impressions and discuss their images in an informal and welcoming atmosphere.
To conclude the day, those who wish are welcome to experience the Latvian sauna tradition at the Zaķusala sauna!
During the photo walk, participants will be encouraged to capture their perspective of the neighborhood through photographs and short notes, which will later be used in a creative zine workshops and a collaboratively created exhibition and publication.
