Learn Latvian
You can learn Latvian:
- in free courses
- in private language learning centres
- individually with a Latvian language teacher, who can be easily found via the portal ss.com, or by contacting private language learning centres
- individually and independently in an online environment or mobile apps;
- during events organised by non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
Only persons who have arrived in Latvia within the last five years and have reached the age of 13 are eligible for participation in courses organized through the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund.
Free Latvian language courses
In Latvia, you can apply for free Latvian language courses. Four organisations offer free Latvian language courses for citizens of third-countries under the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund:
- Association “Education Development Centre”, project “SaRuNa LV or Understand, Speak for the Future in Latvia” ((No. PMIF/13.2./2023/1/02) period 01.08.2023.-31.01.2026.)
During the span of 30 months of the project, it is planned to organise training classes of Latvian language (in the volume of 120 hours) for 33 groups in full-time and remote mode and conversation clubs for various levels of language skills (A and B).
Along with the language courses and clubs, the trainees will receive consultations, be able to participate in common on the spot closing events, thus expanding opportunities for the use of language in daily communication together with Latvian-speaking persons and immediate family members. Training will be organised remotely or in person. Within the framework of the project, graduates will be provided with the option to pass the state language examination at the National Centre for Education. Target group of this project includes also participation of young people aged from 13 to 25 years.

Modern learning materials developed by the Latvian Language Agency will be used in the learning process; all course participants will be introduced to free access materials on the website www.valoda.lv. Many materials are adapted for distance learning. The project also organizes a Latvian conversation club “Let’s talk”.
- Daugavpils University Lifelong Learning, Culture and Science Communication Society “Park of Intellect”, “My Latvian Language Portfolio” (No PMIF/13.2./2023/1/10) period 01.08.2023.-31.07.2026
During the first phase of implementing the project “My Latvian Language Portfolio” from August 2023 to February 2024, six study groups (totaling 86 third-country nationals from Ukraine, Armenia, the Russian Federation, Belarus, and New Zealand) acquired Latvian language skills at levels A1 and A2 both in-person (3 groups) and remotely (3 groups). In the final session, all participants of the Latvian language courses took a test, and upon successful completion of the test, they received a certificate confirming the completion of the Latvian language course programme of 120 hours at the respective level.

Each student is provided with a free study kit (book and workbook), and the course duration is 150 academic hours. The participation age is 17 years or more. Up to 15 participants in the group.

Latvian language self-learning tool for adults e-Laipa (A1, A2, B1, B2)
The Latvian language self-learning tool e-Laipa is designed as an electronic app – a set of learning materials, tests, assignments and self-examination materials. It is recommended for use with Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge or Safari.
Reading texts at levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2
Reading texts include topics about Latvia – culture, places, persons, etc. – and conversational topics – shopping, job and environment, traveling, etc.

Useful resources for learning Latvian if the newcomer already has a basic knowledge of the language
Latvian belongs to the class of inflected languages which are most complex from morphological viewpoint. It has following parts of speech: nouns, adjectives, numerals, pronouns, verbs, participles, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, particles and interjections. Valoda.ailab.lv/latval/ describes inflection rules of Latvian.
