Join the First “Appendix” Guided Art Walk through the Survival Kit 17 Exhibition

On 25 September at 18:00, Riga Congress Hall will host the first art walk/tour of the project “Appendix – a Cut into the Side Currents,” curated and guided by art mediators, designed to raise interest in and knowledge of contemporary art in Latvia among both Latvians and third-country nationals. The guided tour will be led by art mediator Lana Zujeva, who will explain certain things in plain, easy-to-understand language — accessible also to newcomers to Latvia who do not yet fully command the Latvian language. The walk will take participants through the exhibition of the International Contemporary Art Festival Survival Kit 17.

This activity is the first of at least eight guided cultural/art walks planned within the project for third-country nationals and representatives of the local community. Their aim is to create space for a shared cultural experience and conversation, helping newcomers get to know Latvia’s contemporary art environment while fostering networking between the local community and newcomers.

During the walk, the art mediator will help participants grasp the messages and nuances of contemporary art, explaining contemporary art processes in plain language based on the exhibition visited. Participants will together get to know the festival venue and learn about its history, meaning, and place in society. “Appendix” cultural and art walks invite third-country nationals, together with representatives of the host society, to visit museums, exhibition halls, galleries, and exhibition openings. This shared experience helps newcomers better discover the opportunities offered by Latvia’s cultural space and encourages them to become more actively engaged in Latvia’s cultural and social life. At the same time, it gives local residents an opportunity to get to know newcomers better and build more open mutual communication.

About the project “Appendix – a Cut into the Side Currents”

“Appendix – a Cut into the Side Currents” is a project implemented by the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art on the integration of third-country nationals in Latvia through art and community practice.

The project’s Activity No. 4 — “Art Mediators / ‘TCN Culture Guides’ – guided walks” — envisages at least eight walks, involving at least 10 third-country nationals and 10 representatives of the local community. The broader aim of the activity is to promote newcomers’ engagement in Latvia’s cultural and social life, as well as to foster encounters and openness between both sides.

Throughout the project, newcomers are also encouraged to get to know the life of the local community, take part in civic participation activities, and engage as much as possible in various free leisure-time activities.

The project is implemented with the support of the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF). It takes place within the Survival Kit 17 festival, held from 27 August to 27 September at Riga Congress Hall.
